Investigation Missions

Article 45 of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child mandates the Committee to undertake any form of investigation in States on any matter that is within the ambit of the Charter. As a regional treaty body established to promote and protect children’s rights in Africa, the Committee can undertake investigations on any thematic area upon the request by third parties or by its own initiatives. During investigative missions, the Committee holds constructive dialogue with various organs of the State, children's representatives, UN Agencies, CSOs and other stakeholders involved on children’s rights in the respective countries. Following the investigation, the Committee develops reports of the mission which underline its main findings and recommendations. Moreover, the Committee reports its findings and recommendations to the Executive Council of the African Union which can further issue a decision on the matter under investigation.
